UNICEF UK Ambassador Ewan McGregor urges the UK public to help Pakistan's children whose lives have been devastated by the floods. Pakistan is facing a growing humanitarian crisis as worsening floods are affecting even more people than the Boxing Day Tsunami and Haiti earthquake combined. Millions of children have lost their homes and have no food or clean water. More and more of these children are at risk of contracting deadly waterborne diseases like dysentery, diarrhoea and cholera. Please donate now to UNICEF's urgent emergency appeal to help save children in Pakistan: http://bit.ly/ewanflood Watch

Wyclef Jean President Of Haiti? Ex-Fugee Mulling Campaign
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Singer Wyclef Jean is considering a run for president of Haiti but has not decided whether to seek a five-year term as leader of the quake-ravaged nation, the musician’s family said Monday. There have been rumors for some time the Haitian-born entertainer might enter the 2010 presidential contest, ever since his 2007 appointment as ambassador-at-large for the Caribbean nation by President Rene Preval, who cannot seek re-election. In a statement e-mailed to reporters, the family said, “Wyclef’s commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward … If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately.” The letter was signed “The Jean Family.” A spokeswoman for the musician confirmed the message’s authenticity. Jean, 37, was born on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince but left the hemisphere’s poorest country as a child and grew up in New York City’s borough of Brooklyn. He told The Associated Press in a recent interview he intended to be involved in the Nov. 28 election, but not necessarily as a candidate. “Do I have political intentions

Ships Abandon Gulf Oil Well As Tropical Storm Bonnie Approaches, Leave Cap Closed
ON THE GULF OF MEXICO (AP) — Key ships stationed over BP’s crippled well in the Gulf of Mexico were ordered to evacuate Thursday ahead of Tropical Storm Bonnie, but engineers have grown so confident in the leaky cap fixed to well head that they will leave it closed while they are gone. Tropical Storm Bonnie, which blossomed over the Bahamas and was to enter the Gulf of Mexico by the weekend, could delay by another 12 days the push to plug the broken well for good using mud and cement, retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen and BP officials conceded. Even if it’s not a direct hit, the rough weather will push back efforts to kill the well by at least a week. “While this is not a hurricane, it’s a storm that will have probably some significant impacts, we’re taking appropriate cautions,” Allen said in Mobile, Ala. Allen issued the order Thursday night to begin moving dozens of vessels from the spill site, including the rig that’s drilling the relief tunnel engineers will use to permanently throttle the free-flowing crude near the bottom of the well. Some vessels could stay on site, he said. “While these actions may delay the effort to kill the well for several days, the safety of the individuals at the well site is our highest concern,” he said in a statement

Gulf Oil Efforts SUSPENDED: BP Shuts Down Well Work Due To Bad Weather
NEW ORLEANS — A storm brewing in the Caribbean brought the deep-sea effort to plug the ruptured oil well to a near standstill Wednesday just as BP was getting tantalizingly close to going in for the kill. Work on the relief well – now just days from completion – was suspended, and the cap that has been keeping the oil bottled up since last week may have to be reopened, allowing crude to gush into the sea again for days, said retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the government’s point man on the crisis. “This is necessarily going to be a judgment call,” said Allen, who was waiting to see how the storm developed before deciding whether to order any of the ships and crews stationed some 50 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico to head for safety. The cluster of thunderstorms passed over Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, and forecasters said the system would probably move into the Gulf over the weekend. They gave it a 40 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression or a tropical storm by Friday.

Douglas Perlitz Cannot Be Tried In Connecticut For Abusing Haitian Boys: Judge
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A federal judge dismissed charges against a man accused of sexually abusing boys at a school in Haiti, saying he can’t be prosecuted in Connecticut because the alleged crimes didn’t occur here. U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven approved Douglas Perlitz’s motion to dismiss the case Wednesday, ruling that a prosecution in Connecticut violated both the Constitution and federal rules. “The government’s arguments conflate Perlitz’s having prepared for criminal conduct in Connecticut, which may well be shown by the facts alleged, with his having engaged in essential criminal conduct in Connecticut,” Arterton wrote. Perlitz, a former Connecticut resident who now lives in Eagle, Colo., was accused of enticing children at the Project Pierre Toussaint school in Cap-Haitien into sex acts by promising them food, shelter and other items.

Anderson Cooper Receives Medal From Haiti Government
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haiti’s president handed out medals to celebrities, aid-group directors and politicians for post-earthquake work Monday in a ceremony designed to beat back criticism of an uneven recovery that has left 1.6 million people homeless and destitute six months to the day since the disaster. Just out of sight, baking in the oppressive noonday sun, were the fraying tarps of tens of thousands of homeless who live on the Champ de Mars, once a grassy promenade surrounding the government complex. “That is just a way to put the people to sleep. But the people are suffering,” Edouard James, a 32-year-old vendor said when he was told of the ceremony. Unable to find a job with his degree in diplomacy, he sells pirated DVDs in a tarp-covered booth

HUFFPOST HILL – JULY 12TH, 2010
True to form, one of Congress’ first decisions after a week off was to delay Elena Kagan’s committee vote so Judiciary Republicans could think it over some more. Wall Street reform advanced when Scott Brown and Olympia Snow threw their support behind the bill. On the campaign trail, Rand Paul declared that the Tea Party is a mainstream movement even as the NAACP prepared to condemn it for being racist and we’ve developed a new campaign crush: Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Rob Hahn (move aside, Alvin Greene). This is HUFFPOST HILL for Monday, July 13th, 2010 : BREAKING: OLYMPIA SNOWE TO SUPPORT WALL STREET REFORM – “To ensure we avoid another financial catastrophe such as the one that plunged our nation into the worst recession since the Great Depression, it is imperative that we implement an aggressive overhaul of the American financial regulatory system,” Snowe said in a statement just released by her office

Haiti Six Months Later: Soledad O’Brian Tells Stories Of Those Making A Difference
I returned to Haiti in mid June, over a month after having produced a documentary called Rescued on two children whose precarious lives depend on an orphanage run by American Christian missionaries. I don’t have another story to report. I just want to go back. I am haunted by these kids. Cendy Juene is just 6 and she has no one person in the world caring for her, just the kindness of the staff at the Light House orphanage.

Sean Penn Committed To What He Started Six Months After Haiti Quake (VIDEO)
Actor Sean Penn rushed to Haiti six months ago after the massive 7.0 earthquake struck the small country, leaving between 220,000 and 330,000 dead. Today, about 1.5 million are still homeless. Since his arrival Penn has built a relief organization to help tens of thousands survive and has committed to stay in Haiti to finish what he started. He shared his experiences in an exclusive video on “The Early Show” early Monday. “In our case, we came down with the idea of spending two weeks and trying to help out, said Penn. “There’s something that takes over and it’s really an obligation because you see the strength of the people who have never experienced comfort, and the gifts that that can give to people like myself and to our country and culture.
